Random Shop Talks #1: Save the children, smoke a pipe

On February 4, 2009 President Barack Obama signed into law the Childrens Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (Act, Public Law 111-3). The purpose of this act is said to be to fund heath insurance for 7-11 million uninsured children. What’s not to like about that? I like kids. Heck, I fathered two of them, and while I was at it I even insured them.
But doesn’t this cause sound noble enough for all of us to get involved in? Nope.

In the US Congresses infinite wisdom they decided to fund this on the backs of the 45-50 or so million of us who choose to smoke. Isn’t it enough that we support the tobacco farmers? Isn’t it enough that we support the workers of all the tobacco manufacturers, wholesales and retailers? Apparently not. No, because we indulge in a legal, adult activity, WE get to bear the burden of this new entitlement. Now, the naysayers will say (besides ney) that the other noble purpose of this act if to get smokers to stop smoking. Oh really? Well let’s assume that happens. Who will insure the kids?

No, my fellow Americans. I believe it is the responsibility of ALL Americans to take care of these impoverished children living within our borders. I will do my part by smoking all the pipe tobacco I can. The rest of you are on the honor system and need to do the same.
Oh yeah, one more thing that I failed to mention on the video. These taxes are being imposed at the wholesale level. Three important things to remember:
1.) You will not see the taxes itemized on your receipt. This way Congress can play a little game of disguise the tax.

2.) The actual increase we will see at the cash register could be double the tax rate, because retailers usually take their costs and use a multiplier to arrive at their selling price.

3.) This new tax increase is in addition to current state taxes!

That’s right, we are looking down the barrel of what I would call “taxation with stupid representation”.

@confusion94 I … @confusion94 I guess that’s a true statement, but perhaps it’s a bit misleading. The effect of inhaling a cigar or pipe tobacco is much harsher than inhaling a cigarette. Take a look at my Tip #6 and Tip #10 videos for more info on this subject. Scott

i heard that if you … i heard that if you inhale pipe or cigar tobacco it doesnt give the same effect as a cigarette is this true

LOL I nearly fell … LOL I nearly fell out of my seat when you told me the tax increase for rolling tobacco…holy hell…lucky I only smoke a pipe/cigars.

  6. Aristocob

Not if too many … Not if too many cigarette smokers move to the pipe!

  7. arthur84

How do they come up … How do they come up with these wild variations in the tax increase across products? They all contain tobacco, don’t they??

The pipe might be the least popular way Americans enjoy tobacco. Do you think they’ve left us (relatively) unscathed because we’re the minority?

  8. RandomTask2008

You think taxes are … You think taxes are high now on tobacco, wait till them S.O.B’s pass this National Health Care Bill then our taxes are going to go sky high!

As they say around … As they say around these parts “I’m fixin’ to do one”. Summer is a busy time and I’ve also been enjoying my new grandson. More soon, I promise.

    Any requests? Scott

Hey Paul, This … Hey Paul, This might sound crazy to non-smokers but be careful of what you put on the pipe for fear of introducing something toxic into the smoke. That said, I’ve played around with a product called Dye-na-flow, which is a dye used for staining silk. Google the name and the term MSDS to find the Material Safety Data Sheet for this product. I’ve experimented with applying directly to the bare cob then finishing it with lacquer or with mixing it with the lacquer. Both give interesting results.

Hi Scott, thanks … Hi Scott, thanks for all the info. and tips. I was wondering if it was okay to stain and varnish a cob pipe? (not inside the bowl itself obviously)I have one with an unfinished shank and a bowl with a red tinge to the cob itself. At only $6, I thought it would be worth trying.

Thanks Krank. I’ve … Thanks Krank. I’ve been very busy with work and we’re also expecting our fist grandson any day now so that’s also occupying my brain. I did race in a belt sander race in Vegas earlier this month and that video is posted under patentplaceusa. Take a look at it if you are into weirdness. Scott

Very informative. I … Very informative. I didn’t know the actual numbers until watching this video, but the tax increase is why I switched over from cigarettes to smoking a pipe on April 1st of this year.
I couldn’t be happier with changing over. I actually enjoy smoking a pipe, cigarettes was a habit, pipes are a pleasure.

great video – i … great video – i agree the tax on anything unhealthy as deemed by our wonderful nannies is sure to follow. the foot is in the door so to speak.potato chips, alcohol, candy(well they already taxed sugar 50% years ago hershey has moved to mexico, life savers to canada just for example). raised the gas tax then gas prices shot up people stopped driving because they couldnt afford it so the solution is to raise tolls.well at least we won’t have to change the colors of the flag just the pattern.England

kind of off topic. … kind of off topic. anyone know if the major online pipe tobacco companies ship to canada? I have a feeling they don’t.

SAVE THE CHILDREN … SAVE THE CHILDREN My @#%$ children will see nothing all the money will go to banks and GM

  22. MusicDude0812

I’m not sure why … I’m not sure why the gov. is so retarded. Either charge EVERYONE for the insurance of these kids… or…. Go ahead and raise tobacco tax (yes I said it) but let EVERYONE benefit from it, instead of just those kids…

  23. Aristocob

Don’t think for a … Don’t think for a minute that isn’t being considered. I anxiously await the arrival of the “Oreo Tax”. Of course, Congress will hide it at the wholesale level.

  24. azpipeguy

Well said. How … Well said. How about taxing restaurant food ( especially fast food)….more people eat out than smoke. And of course we do have an obesity problem in this country…maybe we can tax the overweight into not eating…

  25. ahmedsadik1983
