Actor Kiefer Sutherland’s Grandfather Tommy Douglas Remembered For Bringing Universal Healthcare System To Canada

As premier of Saskatchewan, Tommy Douglas pioneered a number of progressive policies there, including the expansion of public utilities, unionization and public auto insurance. But his biggest achievement was the creation of universal health insurance, called Medicare. It passed in Saskatchewan in 1962, guaranteeing hospital care for all residents. The rest of Canada soon followed, province by province. After his death Douglas earned the title of The Greatest Canadian in a poll by the CBC. We speak with Canadian doctor Michael Rachlis.

It scares the … It scares the out of me that many Americans are willing to trust corporations over the government.
Corporations don’t give two about anyone, where as the government is by the people.

Im Canadian and our … Im Canadian and our health care is good but were nothing like France, Italy and England. Just watch the movie Sicko and you’ll see.

Americans are … Americans are scared of government control but are willing to let corporations control who lives and who dies. millions of people die every year from no coverage or insurance not paying for their treatment. yet we talk of government take over. the insurance companies makes millions from pples blood, yet we talk of some ideals that are soooooooooo unfair

We Americans seem … We Americans seem like barbarians compared to the Canadians. We don’t take care of the uninsured, we just let them die. It’s called greed and selfishness, propagated by Reagan and his cohorts.

You say in Canada … You say in Canada no one pays for healthcare, someone must be paying or how do healthcare people live. All pay must be controled by your government. In U.S.A. we think our Federal Government has taken control of to much of our lives and we want the control reduced. That is what our country is about. If you like your healthcare fine, just stay out of ours. I think everyone on the planet should come to your country for their healthcare unless you are to inhumane to take them.

carsij is was not … carsij is was not the fact that healthcare got so bad in Canada that we turned to gov’t to run it, people died due to no healthcare because they couldn’t afford something a simple as going to the doctor to get antibiotics. Too bad the world couldn’t come to Canada to get better but we need to protect or system just as much as you are protecting your user pay system. But I must ask if you knew about that this was happening why did your president come to power?

If healthcare in … If healthcare in Canada got so bad that people turned to their Government to run it, to bad. Here in the U.S. we are concerned about Fed. Gov. getting to powerful and want it reduced. Our Healthcare probs can be fixed privately. I think everyone on the planet that is sick should head for Canada. Especially all our illegals. You guys much really be rich. I know Mexico is rich. Seems like the U.S. is now the poor country

I see other people … I see other people have also thought the same thing. The American people really need to be shown straight facts.. no Tv spin but facts about how the idea of Universal healthcare works. (Yes we did have to pay at first but now it has come down and things like lotteries and taxes help to pay for it)

After the facts have told I think it’s important that the US have the first ever Nation wide Referendum. (with definitely NO electoral colleges being applied (which are already a bad idea))

But with universal … But with universal healthcare system you don’t EVER have to worry about if you can afford to go to the doctor. We still have insurance but it’s for side things like dentistry and such. So you can still pick insurance. But let me ask you this should it not be the doctor who tells you which procedure is better and not your insurance company or the size of your wallet.

In Canada if you were to ever get sick… you just go to the doctor… there is no paying after.

Some consider your … Some consider your system disfunctional. This is the USA and we don’t want Fed Gov. into our very personal health care. If the gov. lawyers and state laws would get out of healthcare it would be fine. You stated the Provinces had to come in line to get Federal money. That is what we fear. We want to pick our own insurance and not fall into line that someone else thinks is better

I am really glad … I am really glad they aired this on Democracy Now. There have been some very strange things said about our Medicare system in the US. As someone else pointed out, its not perfect, but for myself, I have never had to worry about whether or not I would be able to receive care. Its something I’m profoundly grateful to Mr. Douglas for and I’m a proud NDP supporter.

I’m Canadian. Our … I’m Canadian. Our system may not be the best. It’s functional and they will never take it away from us. Get past the propaganda. Referendum!

At last, the truth … At last, the truth about Canadian healthcare. I’ve been seeing some very strange stuff on Youtube and the media about our system. It seems that when the stakes-profits-are high people will make up whatever occurs to them.
